SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL NURSE

Crook County School District contracts with The High Desert ESD to provide substitute teachers and school nurses. We are growing our substiute nurses pool to cover our school nurses.
To apply as a subsitute school nurse please apply with The High Desert ESD. You will need to follow the steps below and use the sustitute teacher application.
HOW TO BECOME A SUBSTITUTE EMPLOYEE: An application for the school year in session must be completed in the High Desert ESD Application Portal. In the High Desert ESD Application Portal, search for “Substitute” in the “Job Listings Search” field, then select the appropriate application from the list. The following is required with your application:
- Cover letter that details your experience working with youth and why you want to be a substitute.
- Three references with current email addresses.
- All employment history(up to 15 years past, even if not related to education). If you don’t have up to 15 years employment history, document this on your application.
Step 1. A current, valid Oregon teaching license is required to substitute as a teacher. Do you have an active teaching license in Oregon, or is your license currently in process with Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC)?
Yes – A. Apply for the “Licensed Substitute Educator” job through the High Desert ESD Application Portal. B. Continue to step 2 below.
No– Do you have an active teaching license in another State? Yes – A. Contact TSPC to apply for the Reciprocal Teaching License. B. Apply for the “Licensed Substitute Educator” job through the High Desert ESD Application Portal. (NOTE: You may attend Substitute Orientation while your Oregon license is pending with TSPC.) C. Continue to step 2 below.
No – Do you have a bachelor’s degree or higher from an approved accredited college, university or institution? (To verify if your bachelor’s degree is from an above accredited institution, use the DAPIP database:https://ope.ed.gov/dapip/#/home.) What is an “Institutional Accrediting Agency”? An agency that assures the quality of higher education institutions and programs. Colleges and universities approved for educator education must be accredited by an appropriate institutional accrediting agency at the time the degree or program is completed. These are the ONLY accrediting agencies Oregon TSPC will/can accept per the OAR 584-005-0005: (a) Higher Learning Commission;| (b) Middle States Commission on Higher Education; (c) New England Commission of Higher Education; (d) Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; (e) Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges; and (f) WASC Senior College and University Commission. Yes – A. Apply for the “Restricted License Substitute Educator” job through the High Desert ESD Application Portal. B. Your application will be reviewed by Human Resources. (Do not apply for the TSPC license before receiving High Desert ESD sponsorship approval.) If approved for sponsorship, you will then receive additional information and instructions to proceed with the TSPC “Restricted Substitute License.” (NOTE: You may attend Substitute Orientation while your license is pending with TSPC.) C. Continue to step 2 below.
No– Apply for the “Classified Substitute: Paraeducator/Educational Assistant/Secretary” job through the High Desert ESD Application Portal, then continue to step 2 below.
Step 2. You will receive an automated email from the High Desert ESD Application Portal confirming your application has been received.
Step 3. Next, you will receive an email with a link to request registration for your in-person mandatory orientation. A. After you complete the orientation registration request, your HDESD application will be reviewed. B. If your HDESD application is complete and approved, you will receive an email confirming your orientation registration and the Redmond location address. This email will include important details about paperwork to be completed and legal and required documents you must bring with you to Substitute Orientation (e.g. valid Passport, photo ID, Social Security card or Birth Certificate, voided check/Direct Deposit Authorization Form).
Important information regarding orientation:
- HDESD Substitute Orientation dates are offered multiple times each month, on weekdays through the school year.
- Dates and the locations for the Orientation will be provided to applicants via email invitation once their applications are received.
- Orientation starts promptly at 9:00 am. Plan to participate until 1:00 pm.
- On the same day, after you attend orientation, you will be required to complete a drug screening. High Desert ESD does not test for alcohol or THC. The paperwork and locations for the drug screening will be provided to you at Orientation. If you have questions regarding the mandatory drug screening, please contact the Human Resources office before orientation.
- Be prepared to complete the following forms (HDESD Substitute Documents and Forms), and bring the required supporting documentation to Substitute Orientation.
- Remember to bring your legal and required documents. If all required documents/forms are not brought to Substitute Orientation, you will be required to schedule a time to return with the required documents/forms.

JOB SUMMARY
The school district nurse assists students, in cooperation with school personnel, community agencies and parents; to acquire health knowledge; to acquire attitudes conducive to healthful living; to meet their needs resulting from illness, accident, and physical defect; and to maintain, improve, or adapt to their individual health status. Reports to the Director of Special Education.
In accordance with standards of school nursing practice, Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Nurse Practice Act implement appropriate use of the nursing process to plan and provide individualized nursing care in the school community, including nursing delegation and training for an anticipated emergency.
QUALIFICATIONS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The School Nurse/Nurse works with groups of students and on a one-to-one basis. Students include those who may be physically and mentally handicapped, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, and culturally different. Supervision and instructional responsibilities require the employee to be able to stand for up to 90 consecutive minutes and move rapidly to intervene in situations when a student's safety is being jeopardized. The supervision may also occur during times of inclement weather. The employee needs to be able to travel between schools.
