SUMMARY:
The job of Lead Mechanic is done for the purpose/s of overseeing the transportation fleet maintenance; ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition, which includes determining needed repairs and/or replacements on district vehicles, performing required repairs and preventative maintenance and providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Diagnoses actual or potential vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
- Coordinates and executes preventive vehicle maintenance programs for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition.
- Maintains tools, equipment and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required tools and equipment within a safe work area.
- Maintains records of repairs, costs, vehicle warranties, etc. for the purpose of documenting required information and meeting federal and state requirements.
- Monitors inclement weather conditions and makes delayed start or closure recommendations to supervisor.
- Repairs vehicle systems/components, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition.
- Replaces worn and/or defective vehicle parts/systems (e.g. heating, electrical, tires, pumps, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in a safe operating condition.
- Responds to road calls regarding disabled vehicles for the purpose of performing emergency repair work in the field.
- Orders equipment, parts, fuel, and supplies for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles.
- Performs minor body work (e.g. front ends, fenders, upholstery, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles.
- Directs Mechanic (I) as may be required for the purpose of ensuring functions are performed efficiently and in conformance with required safety and regulatory standards.
- Assess incidents, accidents, and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.
MARGINAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical and planning oversight of the shop and mechanic.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
- Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the methods and techniques employed in diagnosis and repair of internal combustion engines, automotive electrical systems, power trains; air, braking, and hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of the operation and use of computerized diagnostic equipment, mechanic tools and equipment such as valve grinders, torque wrenches, and drill presses.
- Strong analytical skills in diagnosing mechanical problems, determining and prioritizing needed repairs, and completing repairs in a timely and efficient manner.
- Ability to work independently and establish own work priorities consistent with the overall shop priorities.
- Ability to train and/or advise lower level mechanics so they gain additional skills or are able to perform their duties more efficiently.
- Ability and willingness to develop personal knowledge and skills pertaining to position through experience and training.
- Ability and willingness to work in a team environment and exercise collaborative problem solving.
- Ability to perform emergency substitute bus driving as assigned.
- Maintains regular and prompt attendance.
Experience and Education Required:
High School diploma or equivalent, and four years of progressively responsible mechanic experience which included diesel engine overhaul, or additional training in diesel overhaul. Graduation from an accredited vocational or other training program may be substituted for two years of experience.
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required:
Valid Oregon Commercial Driver's License and evidence of insurability. ODE Fingerprint/Background clearance. Ability to obtain Oregon Department of Education Annual Bus Inspector Certification, First Aid certificate, and Oregon School Bus Certificate.
Other:
Must provide a set of standard technician’s tools.

Needs to pick up and lift medium weight objects up to 30 pounds.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally high.
