SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL BUS DRIVER

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION: 

To transport students to and from school and to other authorized activities in a safe, skilled and lawful manner.  Reports to Transportation Supervisor.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

1.              Drive school bus on an assigned route and/or special activity trip, observing all traffic rules and regulations.

2.              Load and unload students at specific stops on an established time schedule.

3.              Perform required pre-trip inspections to determine operating status of signals, lights, wipers, mirrors, brakes, doors, gas and oil.

4.              Report all mechanical difficulties to supervisor.

5.              Record gas, oil and mileage readings as well as any other required operating data.

6.              Insure student activity on bus stays within limit of safe operation.  Report discipline problems to Transportation Supervisor.

7.              Take part in required training and skill building courses, including defensive driving and First Aid/CPR courses.

8.              Fulfill other related duties as assigned.

9.              Fulfill performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required by the position.

10.            Fulfill working conditions and physical effort listed below.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1.              High school diploma or the equivalent.

2.              Able to relate well to students, staff and public.

3.              Read, understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions.

4.              Adhere to the federal requirements of a drug-free work place.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

1.              Length of Year:  Days as Assigned.  Length of Day:  As assigned by Supervisor.

2.              Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

3.              Working closely with children can be physically and emotionally demanding.

4.              Adhere to all Oregon Department of Transportation and Oregon Department of Education rules and regulations, including but not limited to:

           a.         Mental and physical condition (OAR 581-53-006(A)):

                          i.      No impairment of use of foot, leg, finger, hand or arm, or other structural defect or limitation, likely to interfere with safe driving or other responsibilities of a school bus driver.  Drivers may be required to demonstrate ability to:  open and close a manually operated bus entrance door control with a force of at least 30 pounds; climb and descent steps with a maximum step height of 17-1/2 inches; operate two hand controls simultaneously and quickly; have a reaction time of 3/4 of a second or less from the throttle to the brake control; carry or drag a 125 pound person 30 feet in 30 seconds or less; depress a brake pedal with the foot t a pressure of at least 90 pounds; depress a clutch pedal with the foot to a pressure of at least 40 pounds unless operating an automatic transmission; exit from an emergency door opening of 24 x 48 inches at lest 42 inches from the ground in ten seconds or less.
