LOCATION:  Transportation Department

HOURS & DAYS:  180 days per year; 4 - 8 hours per day depending on route

SALARY:  $21.00 - $26.46 per hour, depending on experience (May change based on collective bargaining process)

Job Title:              School Bus Driver

Work Days:           As Assigned

Reports to:           Transportation Supervisor

FLSA Status:         Classified – Non-Exempt

 

JOB SUMMARY:

A school bus driver transports students to and from school and other authorized activities in a safe and professional manner.  Reports to the Transportation Supervisor.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Drive a bus on an assigned route in all weather conditions.
  2. Load and unload students at specific stops on an established time schedule.
  3. Conduct a vehicle pre and post trip inspection as prescribed by law.
  4. Report mechanical difficulties according to department process.
  5. Complete assigned forms and reports in a timely manner.
  6. Maintain the bus to provide a safe and clean atmosphere, inside and out.
  7. Maintain discipline on bus and report discipline problems to appropriate staff; attend student-parent meetings regarding school bus discipline problems, as required.
  8. Interact professionally and courteously with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  9. Maintain appropriate licenses, certifications, and training hours as required.
  10. Drive bus on special trips inside or outside the District.
  11. Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  12. Perform related duties as assigned.
  13. Fulfill working conditions and physical effort listed below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or the equivalent.
  2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  3. Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.
  4. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written communication.
  5. Ability to operate school buses in a safe and lawful manner during varying weather, road, and traffic conditions; and to recognize when conditions are unsafe for bus operation.
  6. Adhere to the federal requirements of a drug-free work place.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Length of Year: Days as Assigned.  Length of Day:  As assigned by Supervisor.
  2. Possess the ability to sit for extended periods of time and perform regular climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, walking, and crouching.
  3. Frequent talking, hearing, reaching, and use of hands for fine manipulation.
  4. Possess ability to exert force to 50-100 pounds occasionally and 25-50 pounds of force frequently.
  5. Frequent near and far acuity, depth perception, focal length change, color vision, and peripheral vision.
  6. Possible exposure to inclement weather conditions and hazardous traffic and/or driving conditions.
  7. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud.
  8. Working closely with children can be physically and emotionally demanding.
