SUMMARY
The job of Mechanic is done for the purpose of assisting the Lead Mechanic with the transportation fleet maintenance; ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Performing preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles; performing safety inspections.
- Perform maintenance on District vehicles including, but not limited to, replacing glass, repairing seats, changing belts and hoses, and repairing and replacing brakes.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
- Assist in maintaining records of repairs, costs, fuel consumption, etc.
- Conduct road tests of repaired vehicles.
- Assist Lead Mechanic or Mechanic with annual inspections of vehicles.
- Fuel vehicles as needed.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Perform the duties of School Bus Driver when required.
MARGINAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Explain mechanical diagnoses and required repairs in a non-technical manner to service advisors and customers.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

QUALIFICATIONS
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
- General knowledge of the functions and repair or internal combustion engines; mechanical and electrical systems; hydraulic, air and electrical braking and steering systems, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of the operation and use of mechanic tools and equipment such as valve grinders, torque wrenches, and drill presses.
- Ability to work independently and establish own work priorities consistent with the overall shop priorities.
- Ability and willingness to develop personal knowledge and skills pertaining to position through experience and training.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability and willingness to work in a team environment and exercise collaborative problem solving.
- Maintains regular and prompt attendance.
Experience and Education Required:
High school diploma or certification equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Any combination or experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate.
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required:
Valid Oregon Commercial Driver's License and evidence of insurability. ODE Fingerprint/Background clearance. Ability to obtain Oregon Department of Education Annual Bus Inspector Certification, First Aid certificate, and Oregon School Bus Certificate.

Needs to pick up and lift medium weight objects up to 30 pounds.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally high.
