JOB SUMMARY
The School Bus Monitor will perform a variety of duties that support positive and safe student behavior on regular district bus routes, special education bus routes, and scheduled activity buses.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.Provides positive behavior support for students on assigned bus routes or activity bus trips.
- Communicates with students, parents and staff to achieve a level of safe, respectable and responsible student conduct that ensures the welfare and safety of all riders and is compatible with federal, state and district rules.
- Facilitates effective communication and a cooperative relationship between bus drivers, students, parents, schools and other agencies.
- Provides conflict mediation between students to support tolerance and respect.
- Administers appropriate documentation in reference to misbehavior notifications or citations on school buses.
- Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff and students.
- Attends work regularly and is punctual.
- Other duties may be assigned as needed.
MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Attends in-services trainings.
- Attends staff meetings.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Behavior adjustment problems in juveniles and methods of treating them. Effective communication counseling techniques and theories.
- Federal, state and District rules and regulations related to transportation of students.
- Modern office procedures, practices and computer equipment.
- Record keeping and report writing
Ability to:
- Effectively conduct individual and group interview sessions.
- Work with students, parents, staff and others in achieving desirable behavior for student bus riders.
- Prepare reports and communicate interpretation as required.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate. A representative way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
- Experience: Minimum of one year experience supervising school-aged children and/or driving a school bus.
- Training: Equivalent to an Associates’ Degree, or any combination of education, including a high school diploma, and relevant work experience.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; stand; sit; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee may occasionally climb stairs or ladders. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision.
